Troubleshooting

  • If Windows XP did not automatically install the printer drivers, you need to manually install the printer drivers after Step 8 above. To do so you will need to select the printer model and manufacturer from the list. You may also select the Have Disk option to install the drivers from a CD, downloaded file, or otherwise.

Mac OSX

  • WARNING! Samba printing on Mac OSX stores your password in plain-text on your machine. This means that it is possible for someone to acquire your password if they have access to your machine. As Mac OSX lpr printing is incompatible with lpr printing on the print server, samba printing is the only way to print documents at this time. This form of printing does allow you to print to the lab printers with correct print quota handling.
  1. Open the System Preferences by going to the Apple Icon in the upper left hand corner, clicking it and then choosing "System Preferences..."
  2. Click the "Print and Fax" icon under the "Hardware" section
  3. Click the plus (+) symbol on the lower left hand side of the screen to add a printer
  4. While holding down the option key, click the "More Printers..." button
  5. Set the topmost dropdown menu from 'Appletalk' to "Advanced"
  6. Set the device dropdown menu to "Windows Printer via Samba"
  7. For device name, the name of the print queue is a good idea, but you can name it whatever you would like. Under Device URL, there is a smb:// already in place for you. The Formatting for the address is as follows: smb://username:password@egr/print/queuename
    1. username:password are your EGR username and password. This is stored in plain-text. Please be sure that you understand the risks associated with this in the above warning.
    2. queuename is the name of the printer. For example, the printer in EB1325 with the duplex feature enabled has a queue name of eb1325-duplex. The format to add this printer would be: smb://username:password@egr/print/eb1325-duplex
  8. Click the Add button.
