Mozilla Thunderbird Setup and Configuration

The following instructions are for Windows, but users of other operating systems may find them useful.

Installation:

  1. To install Mozilla Thunderbird, first download the installer file from here.

  2. Run the downloaded installer, and click "Next". (image)

  3. Unselect any shortcut locations you do not want and click "Next". (image)

  4. Select the location you wish to install to and click "Install". (image)

  5. Click "Finish" and the installation is complete. (image)

Initial Setup:

  1. Launch Mozilla Thunderbird. "Start" → "All Programs" → "Mozilla Thunderbird".

  2. In Mozilla Thunderbird, click on "Tools" then "Account Settings".
    ** Note ** When running Mozilla Thunderbird for the first time, it will skip to part 1 of step 3. (image)

  3. In "Account Settings" click on "Add Account" (image)

    1. In the setup window, choose "E-mail Account" and click "Next".
    2. Enter your full name (eg. "John Smith") in the first text box and complete e-mail address (eg. "SmithJ@egr.msu.edu") in the second box and click "Next". (image)
    3. Choose IMAP for the incoming server and in both the "Incoming Server" and "Outgoing Server" text boxes enter "mail.egr.msu.edu" and click "Next". (image)
    4. Enter your EGR username (eg. SmithJ) and click "Next". (image)
    5. Leave the default account name and click "Next".
    6. Click "Finish".

  4. Next, go to "Account Settings" in the Tools menu. Click on "Server Settings" then select the "SSL" radio button in the Security Settings box and check "Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit" in the Server Settings box. (image)

  5. (NOTE: Skip this step if you have been migrated to the NEW mail server) While still in "Account Settings" and "Server Settings" click the "Advanced" button. This will open a new window where you have to enter "mail/" in the "IMAP server directory:" field. (image)

  6. In "Account Settings" click on "Outgoing Server" then select your engineering account and then click "Edit". Select "TLS" and "Use name and password". Then, change the "Port:" field from 25 to 587. For the "User Name" type in your EGR NetID and then click "Ok". (image)

    ** Note ** Enter only your user name WITHOUT "@egr.msu.edu".

Additional Configuration:

  • Folder Subscriptions

    1. From within Mozilla Thunderbird, click "File" then "Subscribe..." (image)

    2. Choose the folder that you wish to subscribe to (eg. "Spam") and click "Subscribe" or check the box next to the folder. (image)

    3. Click "Ok".
